Fresh water daily & trimming the stems are our top tips for keeping your fresh flowers vibrant for as long as possible. Please visit our Floral Journal for more tips on flower care for fresh flowers, dried and preserved flowers, , Potted Plants and Christmas wreaths. Many flowers also naturally have with guard petals, or outer petals, protecting the delicate petals within as the flower grows. These can sometimes appear old & faded, and often wilt away on their own as the flower blooms. Occasionally, especially for roses or peonies, the florist will not remove the guard petals but will choose to let the flowers bloom with the guard petals to extend the freshness of the flower. These outer petals are left on the flower to preserve it, and are in fact a sign of freshness. These can be carefully removed once the flower has fully bloomed.
We do not recommend using any flowers as food garnish or in food preparation, unless these are specifically labelled as edible. While many flower types are generally edible, such as roses, or a florist may choose to use herbs in a bouquet, such as rosemary or flowering thyme, it is possible that pesticides used to protect the growing plant leave residue on the leaves or blooms as the flowers or plants are intended for decoration not eating. As tempting as it may be to re-use your bouquet in food preparation, we recommend using *only* flowers & herbs that are labelled as edible for food products. Certain flower types are also known to be harmful to pets, for example lilies are known to be highly toxic for cats. For more complete details on which cut flowers are toxic to animals please visit the ASPCA’s page here. (https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants)
